Improving wintering conditions for Branta ruficollis at Techirghiol. Objective Mantaining and protecting the Branta ruficollis population at Lake Techirghiol and it s vicinity is the main objective of this current project and will include the designation of Lake Techirghiol as SPA (Special Protection Area) and the farming of 30 ha for geese to ensure that suitable and divers food resources are available in the area. The total cost of this project is € 657,028. The project will be delivered over 42 months by a partnership of 3 organizations in Romania comprising 1 non-governmental organization (Romanian Ornithological Society) and 2 statutory agencies/ local authorities (The National Administration of Romanian Water - Directorate of Water Dobrogea Litoral and Techirghiol Mayoralty).

MONITORING

Simultaneous winter counts for Red-breasted Goose

The main wintering sites for Red-breasted Goose are along the Black Sea cost in Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria. In order to collect more information about the dynamic and size of the population of Branta ruficollis simultaneous winter counts are conducted at wintering sites.

Starting with November till the end of March, each year, teams of ornithologists from Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria are counting Red-breasted Goose twice a month.
