Red-breasted Goose Conservation Workshop Download materials Download presentations Workshop mindmaps A Red-breasted Goose conservation Workshop was held during 22-25 February 2009 in Moscow, Russia. The aim of the workshop was three-fold: to develop the draft International Species Action Plan, particularly to ensure input from Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine; to develop and improve links with the RBGIWG in these countries; and to provide an update on conservation and research activities on the species and review the potential for future collaborative projects.
The workshop was organized by the Red-breasted Goose International Working Group and was hosted by Goose, Swan and Duck Study Group of Northern Eurasia, Moscow Zoo and the Institute of Ecology and Evolution of Russian Academy of Science. The meeting was generously supported by the African Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (UNEP/AEWA), the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, the Vogelbescherming Nederland, and Moscow Zoo.
The workshop was attended by over 25 experts from the breeding to the wintering sites of Red-breasted Goose, including representatives from Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. Additionally, there were experts from WWT and Wetlands International, and representatives from the Goose, Swan and Duck Study Group of Northern Eurasia (RGG), Moscow Zoo and the Institute of Ecology and Evolution of Russian Academy of Science.
Presentations on monitoring and research activities in the breeding, staging and wintering grounds, covering the results of recent monitoring throughout the range, highlighting threats and issues for the geese, notably fluctuations in water levels and fires. Results were also presented for studies on the breeding grounds, including associations with nesting raptors, and the potential effects of climate change. Talks also covered IBAs in Kazakhstan, and Wetlands International's Wings over Wetlands Project and Critical Sites Network Tool, and their relevance to Red-breasted Geese.
The workshop also developed information for a new EU/AEWA International Species Action Plan, to be published in 2009. Sessions reviewed threats and knowledge gaps for the species, and identified conservation objectives. This developed the information from the Life/AEWA Red-breasted Goose Workshop in Romania in 2008, providing new information for Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
The workshop reviewed priorities for future activity. Priority Red-breasted Goose actions in Russia, identified by the RGG, were presented. The requirements for future monitoring were discussed, to ensure comprehensive population estimates and to provide annual measures of productivity. The need for satellite-tracking to identify migration and wintering sites was highlighted.
The materials from the workshop - the PowerPoint presentations and 'mindmaps' of the threats, knowledge gaps and objectives - will be made available shortly on the RBGIWG's website.
