Life/AEWA Red-breasted Goose Workshop Download materials Download presentations Workshop mindmaps A Life/AEWA workshop on the Red-breasted Goose was held during 26–28 February 2008, in Constanta, Romania. The aim of the workshop was two-fold: to report the results of the Life Project ‘Improving wintering conditions for Branta ruficollis at Techirghiol’; and to prepare a new International Species Action Plan under the auspices of AEWA.
The workshop was organized by the Romanian Ornithological Society and was generously supported by the European Commission through the Life project, by the African Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), Vogelbescherming Nederland (VBN), and the National Authority for Scientific Research from Romania.
The workshop was attended by over 25 experts from the breeding to the wintering sites of Red-breasted Goose, including representatives from all major range states - Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Romania, Russia and Ukraine. Additionally, there were experts from WWT, RSPB, Wetlands International, and AEWA, and representatives from the Romanian Water Authority Dobrogea Litoral.
The workshop began with the results of the Life Project for Techirghiol – a large lake on the Romanian coastline, which is a Red-breasted Goose roost site, and also valued for its mud, used for therapeutic purposes. Four presentations covered the outcomes of the project, management and works at the lake, the dynamics of the Red-breasted Goose in Romania, and a draft National Work Plan for Romania for this charismatic endangered species. There was also a brief field visit to Techirghiol Lake for workshop participants to gain better understanding of the project activities.
The workshop then concentrated on developing a new AEWA International Species Action Plan. Sessions identified threats and knowledge gaps for the species. These were then turned into conservation objectives. The objectives were translated into provisional national work plans for the major range states. There were also presentations on the status and threats in the range states. Further sessions covered the operation and future development priorities of the Red-breasted Goose International Working Group.
The materials from the workshop - PowerPoint presentations, 'mindmaps' of the threats, knowledge gaps and objectives, and the draft National Work Plans - will be made available subsequently on the Red-breasted Goose International Working Group's website.
